Tiny Scarecrow – Reflections on Musical Farming (Believe!)

Flapjacks, Pancakes, and Waffles.

I had a few moments to myself the other day and I got to thinking about what I like to call, the “Family Flapjack.” To be clear, I don’t mean “Family Flapjack” in reference to some kind of pancake that’s been passed down from generation to generation. No, that’s weird and a little yucky. I mean Family Flapjack as in “all members of the genus “flapjack” including pan-fried cakes, iron-cooked waffles, and other tasty breakfast treats. Maybe it would have been easier just to say “Flapjack Family.” No, but then that sounds like I’m talking about some kind of singing group

Forget it, you get the idea. I was thinking about all kinds of flapjacks.

I do like them.

I like them with syrup, or fruit, whipped cream, even gravy (though that’s not as often.) I like them late at night, as breakfast-for-dinner, and at the traditional breakfast-time. I will admit to taking more than I can eat. I always start out thinking, “Wow, flapjacks sound great,” and I pick up a whole stack! Then after the first dozen or so I think, “What was I thinking taking so many flapjacks?”

I always think I can eat more than I actually can. I’m just a little fellow.

I hear over in Britain that “flapjacks” are totally different than pancakes, but that’s okay. I’m willing to give it a try and I say the more variety then better! Besides, I’m less interested in our differences and more interested in the things that bring us together. If Tiny Scarecrow and (whatever British Tiny Scarecrow is … let’s say Wee Straw Fellow) if they get together at breakfast-time it doesn’t matter if one has pancakes and one has British flapjacks and one, (lets say that’s German Scarecrow – Kleine-crow if you will,) maybe he has waffles and it’s all good! Why? Because breakfast foods inspire unity. When you’re talking flapjacks, you’re talking Peace.

So what’s your favorite? Flapjacks, waffles, pancakes, or maybe even toast? That’s great! This morning, think about Tiny Scarecrow, and have a short stack!

You see where I went with that?

Yes, the rumors are true. Buford and Dusty do look good in print! We encourage everyone in our Texas viewing area to pick up a copy of the June issue of Southern Living magazine (on newsstands now) because there's a great article about the Biscuit Brothers in the "Texas" section! For those of you not able to get to a Texas newsstand, you can also check out the full article here.

There's lots of inside information about how we make the TV show and we think it's a great snapshot of where our project is right now.

Tiny Scarecrow’s "Reflections on Musical Farming" (Heartwarming musical intro coming soon.)

Dateline – May 1st, 2008 Tiny Scarecrow sings with Austin Symphony Orchestra!

Wow, spring sure is a busy time here on the farm.  Getting a crop of new melodies together to share with friends, watering the baby instruments (but not the brass – they’ll tarnish) and ... what else? There was something else … oh, yeah … MY BIG SONG with the Austin Symphony Orchestra!

Truth time. I actually WAS the one who hid your shoes. PLUS, I was a little nervous about my song with the Orchestra. Not nervous about singing, that part was easy. I know there are a lot of you out there who saw and heard me so maybe you couldn’t tell, but I had a little trouble with my hay-fever that evening. Yep, being a Scarecrow who’s stuffed with hay and allergic to hay keeps me pretty congested all year long but in Spring with all the beautiful plants blooming my nasal management issues triple.

My chief concern was that I would be singing my song with all those wonderful musicians and then I’ll feel an itch in my nose, and then the itch might turn into a twitch, and the twitch might turn into the largest unstoppable, tornadic sneeze the world has ever seen!  And when the sneeze comes it might blow the flute player’s music right off her music stand into the face of the violinist.  That causes him to throw his bow up in the air and it lands inside a trombone.  But the bow gets shot out of the trombone when he plays his big note and it bounces off the bass drum, past the oboes and straight into the audience like a flaming arrow! Only, no fire. That would be very dangerous. And against the fire codes.

Wait a minute, nobody panic! I think my imagination got away from me there. If I’m ever singing with an orchestra again, I could just bring a hanky and cover my sneeze.  Problem solved.  Now back to work!

Be sure to check out the Wonderful Sneezing Song on the new “Musical Farm” CD.

Plus, I only hid your shoes under your bed; check there first.

NEW ALBUM "MUSICAL FARM" Available On-line!

 musical farm

This new album is our favorite so far! It's got 19 songs and 7 bonus videos that you can play on your computer! And now it's just a click away.

Some of the songs are your favorites from the PBS TV show and Live Concerts and some of them are All-New. Most have never been on an album before and there's new versions of some of your favorites as well.

"Musical Farm" can be both a) a great addition to your collection of Compleat Biscuits and b) a wonderful introduction to the world of the Biscuit Brothers. (It can also be a pretty good waterproof coaster and a serviceable survival reflector, but let that pass...)

Tiny Scarecrow’s “Reflections on Musical Farming"

Dateline – March 12, 2008  Fresh Melody Escapes from Melody Garden!  Last seen humming through the air near your house!

Hello everybody, Tiny Scarecrow here.   Yes, the tabloid-style headline is true. A melody escaped from Old MacDonald’s Musical farm earlier today ... and, painful as it may be, I have to admit it was my fault. Or ... at least partially. Let us say I share the blame with a bag of delicious peanuts.  Perhaps I should elucidate.  A big part of my job here at Old Mac Donald’s Farm (EIEIO) is helping take care of the baby melodies in Melody Garden – and let me tell you it is not as easy as it sounds – they are tricky – and if I’m not right there when the melody pops out of the ground to catch it in a melody bucket – well it goes flying through the air and there's a distinct possibility I may never get it back.  Never is a very long time. It's longer than the time you have to spend waiting for breakfast when it's the middle of the night, longer than the time you spend waiting for the school bus, longer than the time it takes to finally grow up and be big enough for the big-kid swings. Never is a really, really long time.

But I digress. Earlier today I was enjoying a delicious bag of peanuts (not the kind in the jar but the kind in the bag that are still in the shell) and you know how sometimes you’re trying to get that one ornery peanut out of the shell and you twist and turn it and try to pick out the little shell shavings and maybe you blow in your hand a little annnnnnnd ...

OOPS!

The peanut fell right out of my hand onto the ground. Of course, as fate would have it, right when I bent over to pick it up was the very moment the melody sprang from the ground.  That new melody went dashing around like a rabbit on a skateboard drinking a soda! I chased after it as fast as my little stuffed feet could go. A brand new melody can’t fly too far off the ground for the first few minutes which is lucky for a tiny scarecrow like myself.

This way! That way! Back over here! Under that violin stalk! Behind the Tuba Tree! After the chase went on for over 15 minutes (resulting in a completely spilled bag of delicious peanuts might I add) the new melody went soaring up, up, up into the sky! I jumped as high as I could, but it was already beyond my reach. The melody had escaped!

Latest reports say that it was last heard flying through your neighborhood so keep an ear out for it!  If you hear a melody on the wind, or you start humming a tune that you’ve never heard before – it just might be the one that escaped this morning.  It's really quite harmless.  Just try to catch it in a regulation grade 3 Melody Bucket, or if you don’t have one lying around try to memorize the tune.  You see, this melody doesn’t even have lyrics.  That’s right – it is a song without words!  So the moment you catch it or memorize the tune – the only way to tame it is to add words.  Then it will be a song ready to share.
